You’ll love Dear Haiti, Love Alaine

Authors: Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine is an emotional journey through the eyes of young adult Alaine. But in this novel, we’re treated to multigenerational stories taking place in Haiti that are rich in history.

Few go through their teenage years with so much happening in such a short (relatively) amount of time. The adventures and mishaps of the protagonist are reminiscent of some of the Great American Classics such as “The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin” and perhaps even “The Outsiders.” This story touched a nerve because, while it’s written, for the most part, in the voice of two 17-year-olds. The subject matter is much more complex than garden variety young adult novels. It also dives the protagonist’s mother’s history, who is closer to my own age.

As an additional character of sorts, the authors weave Haiti into the story, not just as the main setting, but by and large as a protagonist as well. They portray Haiti as an oasis, ready to be discovered and hopeful for what the next generations will bring. But, what else can you expect when one of the authors spent more than eight hours a day writing in a tourism sales and marketing voice?

This novel is not only insightful but also thoughtful, and the authors deserve a round of applause. I promise you’ll devour this novel’s richness!
